Formation in Action

A deeply rooted life in Christ isn’t just for the good times.

Walking this path isn’t always easy, but we truly believe spiritual formation happens in community as well as through personal spiritual practices. To aid this journey, we offer everything from marriage support to professional counseling.

What is Formation in Action?

Spiritual formation happens in community.

Spiritual formation is the journey of becoming more like Christ. Often, we think of that as a personal journey, but at its heart, it is a journey best taken together. In addition to our generation-based ministries, we have groups specifically for folks navigating life’s challenges.

Marriage Counseling

We want to see marriages strengthened in our community.

Marriage is a divinely ordained institution and, at Christ Central, we seek to treat it as sacred and provide opportunities for support and encouragement for couples in our church.

Why consider marriage counseling?

Marriage isn’t always easy, but it’s worth seeking help for. At Christ Central, we recognize that spiritual health and growth are intimately tied to emotional and psychological health. That’s also true for the health of our marriages.

We can help you connect to a therapist with whom we have a personal relationship. Every professional we refer to is someone we have met face-to-face and interviewed concerning their practice. Our goal is to present you with therapists we know, trust, and believe you will connect with easily, to find the help you need.

We’ve provided space to the right where you can make a confidential request for a counseling referral. Feel free to share whatever information feels necessary and safe. We’ll do our best to offer you the name(s) of therapists or resources we believe can help you.

Professional Counseling

Support for your emotional and spiritual well-being.

Life can present challenges that feel overwhelming. Seeking help is a courageous step toward healing. We have curated a list of professional counselors who can facilitate a space for healing by providing you with a safe place to talk about your life.

Why consider professional counseling?

We all experience times of stress, grief, sadness, or conflict so it's difficult to discern at what point to get professional help. Truthfully, counseling can be beneficial regardless of how "serious" your problem seems to be.Sometimes we need a safe place to talk, and professional counseling can provide that.

Here are a few signals that professional counseling could be helpful for you:

  • The problem you are experiencing significantly affects your quality of life (eating habits, sleep, relationships, work, etc.)
  • You've been through a traumatic experience, and it seems to have overtaken you and your daily life.
  • Significant loss or grief (death of a loved one, major illness, beginning a difficult new season)
  • You are using a substance (alcohol, drugs, etc.) to cope with your feelings or circumstances.
  • You feel hopeless and have become disinterested in activities you used to enjoy.
  • Significant relationships in your life have been impaired or ended because of what's happening to you.
  • Loved ones in your life have mentioned they are concerned about you and/or your behavior.
  • You're here, and you don't know where else to turn.

Connecting you with professionals we know and trust.

We have established relationships with licensed therapists in the Durham area. Each counselor we refer has been personally vetted to ensure they provide compassionate and effective care.

How to get started:

Christ Central Church is delighted to come alongside our members and attendees as they pursue emotional and mental health. We offer partial support for up to 8 sessions, and we require that applicants contribute at least a portion to the cost of each session. We can issue support in the form of direct payment to the therapist or a reimbursement (receipt required). If you have questions or concerns, please send us an email.

Understanding that sharing your story can be a vulnerable and painful process, we aim to honor and protect your privacy through our confidential referral system.

Member Care

Creating intentional space to pause, check in, and experience genuine care

So much of church life comes with built‑in expectations: we expect to gather on Sundays, we expect to serve, we expect to give. These are all beautiful rhythms of discipleship. But we want to gently introduce one more expectation—the expectation of being known. The expectation that at least one person in this community knows what’s going on in your life, your heart, your walk with God, and even your struggles.

Our hope is that these conversations help answer two important questions we don’t often say out loud:

“Who really knows me?”
“And am I known right now?”

We are a busy community filled with people who genuinely care. Membership Care simply helps members of Christ Central pause long enough to live that out.

How it Works

  • You choose your meeting partner—someone you already know and do life or ministry with. If no one comes to mind, we’d love for you to meet with Charlie Densmore, our Connections and Congregational Care Director.
  • You choose a time and location that works for both of you.
  • You use the conversation guide below to help you share openly, listen deeply, and pray together.
  • There is no strict deadline for these meetings, but we would like everyone who is a member of our church to complete a meeting by June.

Conversation Guide

Use these questions as a framework for your time together:

  • How are you really doing?
  • Where do you sense God growing or leading you?
  • Struggle is inevitable—where are you experiencing it this season?
  • Our hope is that every member lives on mission. What does that look like for you now or down the road?
  • Would it be helpful to continue this conversation with a staff member, pastor, elder, or WLC? If yes, who might that be?

There’s no pressure to cover every question, and no expectation that the conversation looks the same for everyone. The goal is simply connection—trust, vulnerability, honest questions, and spiritual encouragement.

After you meet

We'd love to know that your conversation happened. It's a simple way for us–as pastors, elders, and leaders–to celebrate the life of our church and make sure members who need follow-up care recieve it.

Please take one minute to fill out the very short form below. It doesn't ask for personal details, just a quick reflection on how the time went and whether any support or follow-up might be helpful.
