Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information

Below is an update from 5/15/20
We write to provide an update of how we continue to be the church during this time. We continue to abide by city and state recommendations, and our plans are informed by estimates of how the state will move forward as well as advice from medical professionals within our community.

We know that everyone is in a different situation and has different levels of comfort. Some of you may not be ready for in-person offerings due to health risks or otherwise, while others of you may be ready for in-person offerings to resume. As we offer options for moving forward, please do what works for you and as you see fit for yourself.

When Durham’s stay-at-home orders are lifted, this is how we plan to move forward:
Step 1: Build Community and Love your Neighbor
  • Invite your neighbors over for socially distanced community and watch the service together. Consider a backyard gathering to maintain distance. Share brunch together or invite your neighbors to bring their own snacks and drinks.
  • Share the link to our service with your neighbors if you’re not ready to invite folks over.
  • NEW: We’re excited to roll out Summer Huddles! Enjoy in-person community by participating in same-sex groups of three or four people.
    • If you’re currently in a City Group, you’ll be placed in a group of three to four people from your group. These Summer Huddles will meet three times per month. On the fourth week, you’ll meet with your full City Group. You still need to sign up even if you’re already in a City Group.
    • If you’re not in a City Group, we’ll group you with three other people. These Summer Huddles will meet four times per month.
    • Sign up here by Wednesday, May 27 for a Summer Huddle!
  • Central Kids will continue to provide Children’s Church at Home Videos, children’s bulletins and teaching lessons.
    • Central Kids will begin to roll out small gatherings at parks and outdoors in neighborhoods.
  • Central Students will participate in their own Summer Huddles! Sign your student up and we’ll put them with others from Central Students.
    • Central Students has plans for a few socially distanced events.

Step 2: Adding Communion Services
  • As soon as it is safe to gather in smaller groups, we’ll offer communion services at our church office. We will partake of the Lord’s Supper together, maintaining strict sanitation guidelines and taking individual servings of the body and blood of Christ. We have really missed this sacrament, and we can’t wait to be able to add it back into our regular offerings.
  • And we’ll continue Step 1.

Step 3: Gatherings at Hayti and Beyond
  • We miss being with you all and long for the day when at least a smaller group of us can worship together in person. As larger gatherings are allowed, we will gather at Hayti, our church office, and potentially other locations for socially distanced worship. We really don’t know when this will occur; unfortunately, it is likely several months away.
  • We have already begun preparing for in-person gatherings by stocking up on hand sanitizer, single-use masks, thermometers, and other precautions to help us stay safe when we are together.
  • Central Kids will continue to provide Children’s Church at Home Videos, children’s bulletins and teaching lessons.
    • Central Kids will continue to provide small gatherings in neighborhoods and in local parks.
  • Central Students hopes to resume meeting fairly normally.

These plans don’t have a particular date or time because we simply don’t know. We will keep you informed as things evolve. We are grateful to all of you for continuing to be the church in your homes and neighborhoods.

Grace and peace,
The Christ Central staff team
